With an approximate enrollment of 7,500 pupils and twelve total schools, the district had four of them that were rated ?Critical? by the state and two more that scored a ?Needs Improvement?. The school board had had enough of their less than average four-year high school graduation rates. So, they fired the superintendent and held a search.They finally settled on Dr. Ezola Clay-Olatuni. And the brilliant Black woman began turning the district around immediately. She got rid of all of the former superindent?s direct reports and hired her own selections. Now, there were no schools on the ?Critical? list and only one on ?Needs Improvement?. And she?d only been there for two years.
